ADS-B EQUIPAGE

Automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast airborne equipage monitoring

At EUROCONTROL, in the context of our wider automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast (ADS-B) activity, we have been monitoring ADS-B airborne equipage in Europe since 2000.

Through our ADS-B monitoring task, we provide data on aircraft equipage rates, performance metrics and detection of surveillance avionic anomalies to our stakeholders.

We base ourselves on surveillance data gathered by our own infrastructure, as well as data provided by air navigation service providers (ANSPs), ensuring that our monitoring process is efficient and cost-effective for our Member States and other stakeholders.

Monitoring overview

To showcase our activity, the following data illustrates the evolution of aircraft equipage with ADS-B version 2 as required by the European Commission Regulation (EU) 1207/2011 (SPI IR) and its subsequent amendments.

ADS-B v2 equipage

Current equipage by February 2024

  • Aircraft

    96.3%
  • Flights

    98.2%

Note: This graph presents the ADS-B v2 equipage rate of aircraft and flights operating in the NM area. The aircraft equipage rate is the percentage of ADS-B v2 equipped aircraft with respect to the total aircraft fleet. The flights equipage rate is the percentage of flights performed by ADS-B v2 equipped aircraft relative to the total number of flights.

ADS-B V2 equipage per market segment by February 2024

This graph presents the ADS-B v2 equipage rate of aircraft operating in the NM area per market segment. The aircraft equipage rate is the percentage of ADS-B v2 equipped aircraft with respect to the total aircraft fleet. The aircraft classification has been derived following the STATFOR market segment rules.

ADS-B Airborne Equipage in TMAs by February 2024

Our ADS-B airborne equipage TMAs map depicts the ADS-B airborne equipage in the terminal airspace of the top 200 European airports. It is estimated as the proportion of aircraft equipped with ADS-B v2 with respect to the total number of aircraft operations (arrivals and departures).

The equipage rate is represented by the colours based on the legend below.

ADS-B v2 equipage – EU aircraft

Current equipage by February 2024

  • EU

    96.9%

Note: This graph presents the ADS-B v2 equipage rate of aircraft operating in the NM area and registered in the EU27+4 States (EU’s 27 Member States, as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and UK).

ADS-B v2 equipage – Non-EU aircraft

Current equipage by February 2024

  • Africa

    89.7%
  • Asia

    97.4%
  • North America

    97.1%

Note: This graph presents the ADS-B v2 equipage rate of aircraft operating in the NM area and registered outside of the EU27+4 States. These aircraft are mainly long haul.

Note:

  • ADS-B version 2 corresponds to the EUROCAE ED-102A/RTCA DO-260B Minimum Operational Performance Specification (MOPS).
  • Information shown in the graphs has been recalculated in January 2021 following an enlargement of our monitoring capabilities to a complete coverage.
