Network Operations Report – October 2017

Traffic in October 2017 increased by 5.0% compared to October 2016 and was above the high forecast. Traffic has shown continuous growth since November 2015. Fourteen states each added daily more than 50 flights to the network with Spain, Italy and Germany as the top contributors. The traffic flows adding most flights in October 2017 were from Germany to both Greece and Portugal with 20% traffic growth.

Total ATFM delays increased by 29.3% in October 2017 compared to October 2016. En-route ATFM delays increased by 75.7% mainly due to ATC disruptions; airport ATFM delays decreased by 7.8%.

Highlights include:


  • French ATC industrial action from 09 to 11 October generated over 227,000 minutes of ATFM delay.NM estimates there were 1,200 fewer flights during the action;
  • High delays in Karlsruhe UAC due to ATC staffing;
  • Capacity issues in Marseille, Karlsruhe, Maastricht and Reims ACCs;


  • There were capacity issues at both Istanbul airports, Amsterdam/Schiphol and Paris/Orly airports;
  • Seasonal weather impacted London/Heathrow and Amsterdam/Schiphol airports.

The average en-route ATFM delay per flight in the NM areai in October was 0.85 min/flt, which is double the corresponding monthly guidelineii value of 0.39 min/flt. The average YTD en-route ATFM delay per flight in 2017 in the NM areai is 0.99 min/flt, which is above the corresponding guideline value of 0.54 min/flt.
