Skyway - Spring 2025

In this issue we gather expert views from policy-makers, air navigation service providers, EUROCONTROL specialists, researchers, industry and other key stakeholders on how we can offer the most fuel-efficient trajectories for all airspace users in the European sky balanced with protection of the environment at low and high altitudes, from noise levels around airports to contrail formation prevention.

We hear from the European Commission’s DG MOVE, CANSO and ICAO on the strategic programmes, policies and solutions in place to support wider society and the aviation industry. The Air Transport Action Group takes a deep dive into the trade-offs and issues behind developing policies in this area. We also report on the environment’s impact on air traffic operations, especially in the form of wilder, more unpredictable weather events and what this means for peak-time summer traffic planning by EUROCONTROL's Network Manager.

We also examine the challenges and benefits of moving towards more digital CNS/ATM systems – and some of the key initiatives underway through the Agency to improve the performance of the European ATM system.
