In 2023, air traffic increased by 10% compared to 2022, reaching a total of 1,711,251 flights. When compared to pre-COVID levels, MUAC flights in 2023 closed at 92% of 2019 levels.  Celebrating a momentous milestone, MUAC controlled its 50 millionth flight since the inception of its operations in 1972, a testament to unwavering dedication and expertise in handling air traffic with precision and safety.

Throughout the year, MUAC remained steadfast in its commitment to safety, ensuring the secure passage of over 5000 flights per day during the busy summer season. 

MUAC demonstrated excellence and innovation across various fronts and remarkable achievements and continued progress in shaping the future of air navigation services were achieved: 

  • MUAC received the prestigious main prize for ADS-C at the ATM Awards in the Airspace Management category,
  • MUAC's integrated flow management position (iFMP) became operational at the Karlsruhe Upper Area Control Centre, and
  • MUAC played a pivotal role in supporting Air Defender 2023, one of the largest multinational military exercises in Dutch and German airspace.

The implementation of H24 cross-border free route airspace between DFS' Karlsruhe Upper Area Control Centre and EUROCONTROL's MUAC marked a significant advancement in optimising routings, fuel efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reflecting MUAC's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

2023 ended on a high note at the annual customer consultation in Amsterdam, where the participants engaged with the MUAC team and provided a lot of positive feedback and encouragement for the work done.
