EUROCONTROL-GUID-200 - EUROCONTROL Guidelines on Mode S Interrogation Configuration to Reduce 1030/1090 MHz RF Usage

This document addresses the critical issue of Mode S over-interrogations, which pose significant risks to both technical and operational aspects of air traffic management (ATM).

Excessive Mode S interrogations can saturate the 1030/1090 MHz frequency band, degrade surveillance performance, and risk transponder shutdowns. To address this, EUROCONTROL has published technical guidelines to support the optimal configuration of Mode S radars and WAM (Wide Area Multilateration) systems. The document offers practical configuration guidance and promotes harmonised practices across civil and military surveillance systems.

These recommendations help:

  • Improve efficiency of the 1030/1090 MHz spectrum
  • Ensure reliable transponder operation

To support consistent implementation, the document also defines common references and terminology - helping to avoid misinterpretation among various parties engaged in the acceptance and configuration of interrogators including the system operators, frequency managers and regulatory authorities.

Use the official tool to perform the calculations described in the guidelines and support your system configuration process.
