EUROCONTROL has released an updated briefing on the impact of COVID-19 on aviation in Turkey.

The briefing (available for download below in English and Turkish) provides key facts and graphics and is one of a series covering the impact of the crisis on countries across Europe.

It includes a specific country-level forecast, which shows that in the (most likely) Scenario 2, 2024 traffic in Turkey is expected to achieve 98% of the 2019 level.

More information on the recent forecasts produced by EUROCONTROL can be found here.

The briefing includes also information on airports, the major airlines, market segments and traffic flows, including:

  • Total flights lost since 1 March 2020: 0.7M flights;
  • Current flight status: 1736 daily flights or -47% vs 2019 (7-day average);
  • Traffic forecast: 52% of 2019 in 2021 & 70% in 2022;
  • GDP: +5.1% in 2021 & +3.1% in 2022 (vs. previous year);
  • Vaccination: 15.1 per hundred people fully vaccinated;
  • Busiest airport: Istanbul IGA with 658 average daily flights (-46% vs. 2019);
  • Busiest airline: Turkish Airlines with 865 average daily flights (-39%vs2019).

The briefing (attached) provides key facts and graphics and is one of a series covering the impact of the crisis on countries across the EUROCONTROL Network.

Turkey has shown a strong performance in recent weeks, when compared to other countries. But it has still lost almost half a million flights compared to 2019 and around a hundred million passengers. Flights to/from/within Turkey are currently 64% down on last year and the number of passengers is 74% down. Although we saw some recovery in the summer, traffic is again falling at present.

The briefing includes information on airports, the major airlines, market segments and traffic flows, including:

  • Last week IGA Istanbul and Istanbul SG flights were 55% and 34% down on last year;
  • Turkish Airlines/Pegasus/SunExpress flights were 50/30/48% down on 2019;
  • Domestic flights were less affected (29% down).
