Controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) – recommended practices

Controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) – an air/ground datalink application - offers the benefit of an additional, independent and secure channel, which reduces the strain on busy VHF sector frequencies, transmitting clear messages with no risk of misunderstandings.

EUROCONTROL has now made available new recommended practices to help pilots and operators to ensure efficient use of CPDLC across the European datalink airspace —  including logon code use for Navblue Mission+, Lido mPilot, and Jeppesen. These updated practices aim to strengthen communication with air traffic control, improve predictability, and support safer, more efficient operations in European airspace, especially with regards to peak traffic expected during the summer period.

Key recommended practices for CPDLC:

  • log on before departure or at least 10 minutes before entering CPDLC airspace
  • perform a manual logon when automatic handovers do not succeed
  • apply company SOPs when executing CPDLC messages
  • always verify clearances and revert to voice if needed

Guides are available for Navblue’s Mission+, Lido mPilot and Jeppesen.
