The purpose of the specification is to define the services provided by a Surface Movement Awareness System (SMAS), which aims to enhance situational awareness and safety in airport surface operations.
It describes two core services:
- Surveillance Service: This is the foundational service and the minimum required for implementation. It enables automated situational awareness by displaying the identification, position, and tracking of cooperative mobiles within a predefined coverage volume on a Human Machine Interface (HMI).
- Alerting Service: Building upon the Surveillance Service, this component provides automated alerts to Air Traffic Controllers, Apron Controllers, and Aerodrome Flight Information Service Officers. These alerts are designed to support operational decision-making and improve safety.
