This is based on an extensive literature review on available methods, so far only addressing parts of the problem. These are presented and compared.In addition, it proposes the first time an approach to overcome the problem of missing smoke number (SN) information in the ICAO Engine Exhaust Emission Data Bank. The SN information is required to estimate PM, but not available for all engines currently in use by aviation.
