Aircraft Detection Lighting Systems (ADLS) implementation options

In Europe, obstruction lighting is required at night on wind turbines and other obstacles to help aircraft identify potential hazards. While essential for aviation safety—particularly for general aviation and special operations aircraft—continuous red and/or flashing lights can also contribute to light pollution, disturbance to residents, and impacts on wildlife.

Aircraft Detection Lighting Systems (ADLS) can help address these challenges by activating obstruction lighting when aircraft are detected in the vicinity, reducing unnecessary illumination while maintaining the required level of aviation safety. ADLS offer a way to balance aviation safety with the needs of local communities and the environment.

This document provides practical guidance on the implementation of Aircraft Detection Lighting Systems, with a particular focus on wind farms and similar tall obstacles. It aims at supporting wind farm operators, airspace users, regulators, ANSPs, or other industry stakeholders to understand available approaches about ADLS implementation.
