ADSCENSIO

Automatic dependant surveillance contract enables and supports improved ATM operations

The ADSCENSIO project (SESAR2020 Wave 3 PJ38) aims to demonstrate improvements in air traffic management (ATM) operations enabled by the use of ADS-C data, the downlink of the aircraft’s intensions via the “data link infrastructure”. ADS-C implementation is based on the latest ATS-B2 data link standard (covering CPDLC v2 and ADS-C v1) as published in March 2016.

Objective

The project aims to use this downlinked data to enhance existing ATM processes and evaluate its improvements, including:

  • traffic flow management,
  • 2D consistency check and conformance monitoring,
  • conflict detection and resolution,
  • traffic sequencing, and
  • facilitation of continuous vertical evolution (for descending or climbing flights).

The project also assesses the infrastructure capacity, which is currently still based on VDL Mode 2. The feasibility and the efficiency of the “ADS-C Common Service” is another major element of this demonstration.

ADSCENSIO will hence benefit from concomitancy with the IRIS project to demonstrate the use of a SATCOM link to exchange ATS-B2 messages.

The demonstrations cover data collection, data analysis, operational evaluations and the before mentioned evaluation of the ADS-C Common Service prototype and IRIS SATCOM trials.

EUROCONTROL’s Role

At EUROCONTROL, we contribute to the ADSCENSIO project via our MUAC pre-operational trials. In addition, we provide core data link expertise and are one of the ground sites establishing ADS-C contracts with the participating aircraft, supporting the recording, distribution and analysis of the collected data.

ADSCENSIO’s focus is Solution 115 (extended projected profile (EPP) availability on ground); however, the use of the ADS-C data as collected via this PJ38 is linked to multiple other solutions, including:

  • Solution PJ.18-W2-53B (improved ground trajectory predictions enabling future automation tools),
  • Solution PJ.18-W2-56 (improved vertical profiles through enhanced vertical clearances), and
  • Solution PJ10-02a (improved performance in the provision of separation with use of ADS-C/EPP data).
