Airport safety nets

We help define, consolidate and validate additional safety barriers to mitigate the risks of runway incursion, runway excursion and more generally the risk of incidents and accidents involving aircraft at the airport.

Safety is aviation’s top priority. To further improve safety in airports, the SESAR research project PJ 03b SAFE will define, consolidate and validate additional safety barriers to mitigate the risk of runway incursion, runway excursion and more generally the risk of incidents and accidents involving aircraft at the airport.

The project covers four solutions. Associated standardisation activities will be carried out in relation to each solution, as needed. 

Our contribution

Through real-time simulations, EUROCONTROL contributes to the development and validation of the airport safety net for controllers, now extended to all airport areas, for example detection of ATC conflicting clearances push-back/push-back, push-back/taxi, taxi/taxi, deadlock situations.

Solutions

The project is centred around four solutions:

Solution one - Enhanced airport safety support tools 

Air traffic controllers will be provided with the means to prevent the delivery of conflicting clearances and to detect failure to comply with clearances throughout the airport.

Solution two - Conformance monitoring alerts 

A warning mechanism for pilots in case of aircraft behaviour that is inconsistent with ATC clearances or procedures. 

Solution three - Traffic alerts for airport operations

Traffic alerts for pilots will significantly decrease the risk of collision with any mobile on the runways and taxiways, improving safety during airport operations.

Solution four - Tools for avoiding runway excursions

This solution focuses on runway excursion risk mitigation with the help of onboard and ground warning systems for pilots and controllers and seeks to address the most frequent type of runway safety accidents.
