Potential savings

The improvement measures implemented since AIRAC 2004  could have led to:

248 000 NMs

flown less on shortest available route

1,488 tonnes

less fuel used

4,960 tons

less CO2 emitted

1,240,000

saved

Real-world performance

Based on our filed flight plan indicator, the actual situation during AIRAC 2004 was:

301,000 NMs

flown more compared to shortest available route

1,806 tonnes

more fuel used

6,020 tons

more CO2 emitted

1,505,000

spent

Key reasons

Potential causes having an impact on flight planning/ airline choices:

  • Geopolitical (Ukraine, Libya and Syria);
  • Regulations due to capacity/ staffing problems in the network;
  • Traffic composition/ demand;
  • Industrial action;
  • Weather (several key ANSPs were affected by traffic re-routing);
  • Financial (fluctuation of route charges over Europe).

Note: Aircraft Operators adjusted their schedules in reaction to COVID-19 and in reaction to State-implemented travel restrictions, resulting in a significant decrease of flights operated in the NM area (more than 20,000 fewer flights daily compared to 2019). As a consequence the data, statistics and results in this report might not be as reliable and accurate as usual.
