Together towards safe UAS integration

22 March 2018

Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) of all sizes, types and capabilities into airspace that is already crowded poses quite a challenge.

The UAS industry has witnessed substantial growth over the past few years, with drones becoming much more affordable and accessible to the public. UAS activities are increasing rapidly; so, the primary goal is to ensure that a level of safety equivalent to that of manned aviation is maintained.

Efforts to develop rules, regulations, procedures and standards for UAS integration are well underway. EUROCONTROL is running several initiatives in close collaboration with stakeholders to share best practices and to tackle the issue of safely integrating UAS into airspace.

One such initiative taken in cooperation with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is the creation of a series of webinars connecting interested parties – from air traffic management experts, air navigation service providers (ANSPs), UAS traffic management (UTM) system providers and drone manufacturers to UAS enthusiasts.

After having successfully concluded a first round of webinars, we are pleased to invite all interested parties to a second round.

This second round of online discussions will focus on three key topics: airspace assessment, common altitude reference systems and flight rules. The ultimate goal is to collate ideas and opinions expressed by all airspace users and consolidate them into guidelines material on each of the three topics.

Join the conversation and help us to develop the ATM implementation material needed for the safe integration of UAS.
