From patchwork to network

Digital European Sky conference 2019 panel

Eamonn Brennan, Director General of EUROCONTROL, attends major Digital European Sky conference, agrees on the need to go ‘from patchwork to Network’.

The “Digital European Sky” conference organised on Thursday 12 September by the European Commission and the Finnish Presidency of the EU, with all of aviation’s key players including EUROCONTROL present, looked at how to move forward with a shared vision on how to build the Single European Sky, and reached a clear consensus: it is time to use the positive momentum and move from ‘patchwork to Network’.

Sanna Marin, the Finnish Minister of Transport, set the scene in her opening statement by emphasising the importance of developing air transport services that meet the needs of passengers – while, at the same time, putting as little pressure on the environment as possible.

In the opening panel chaired by Henrik Hololei and with the participation of Eamonn Brennan, EUROCONTROL DG, Regula Dettling-Ott (PRB), Olivier Jankovec (ACI-Europe), Jan Klas (ANS Czech Republic and CANSO CEO Chair), Sylviane Lust (AIRE) and Choorah Singh (Ryanair), the speakers addressed among other points the challenge of building a sustainable air traffic management system, the role of economic incentives in providing capacity, the potential benefits of a harmonised upper airspace charging zone, and the role of a 'capacity manager'.

The afternoon saw panels on achieving a "Fresh boost with digitalisation" led by Florian Guillermet, Executive Director SJU; and on "Safety, people and automation - at the crossroads" chaired by Patrick Ky, Executive Director EASA.
