But although many jobs have been lost across the industry, aviation will recover. Over the years ahead, that’s a chance for the sector to ‘build back balance’, improving the gender balance of the sector at the same time as it looks to ‘build back better’ from COVID-19.
EUROCONTROL aims to seize that opportunity in the years ahead and play our part in helping aviation improve gender balance, diversity and inclusion, in a sector where women only occupied an estimated 22% of roles pre-pandemic.
While the Agency’s current male-female ratio is slightly better than that at 71:29, we will continue our efforts to attract excellent women candidates to our future aviation roles. Between 2018 and 2020, when the pandemic forced us to freeze new jobs, the M/F gender ratio of our new recruits stood at 59:41, and we intend to maintain that progress once aviation recovers and we resume strategic recruitment once more.
