A first step towards a European Network of Innovation Labs

Woman in a laboratory

As part of our efforts to support the digital transformation of European air traffic management (ATM), EUROCONTROL’s Experimental Centre at Brétigny is setting up a European Network of Innovation Labs, with Brétigny acting as an Air Transport Innovation Hub.

These labs which are designed to accelerate innovation and the uptake of digital SESAR solutions in aviation. The initiative envisages 20-30 labs different locations across Europe dedicated to aviation stakeholders and aiming to improve the way we serve and connect our operational partners.

Projects

Work has already started on a set of pilot projects which will feed into the initiative to develop a European Network of Innovation Labs. Discussions have been launched with seven key European airlines (Air France, easyJet, Ryanair, Swiss, Transavia, Vueling and Wizzair) and a major European airport (Paris-Orly) to investigate how best to address their operational needs, and a set of pilot projects to test the new way of working together have been proposed. Of the 12 potential projects identified, 3 have been selected as priority projects:

  • Forecast of the ATC Delay Evolution for a Regulated Flight
  • Forecast of Holding Time at Arrival
  • Curfew Collaborative Management.

Kick-off meetings have taken place for all three projects to refine end-user needs and build a consolidated work plan, which will run from mid-October 2020 to the end of March 2021.

The projects will involve various airline, airport and EUROCONTROL Brétigny experts, who over the next six months will develop prototypes for the three pilot cases in an agile way, using two-week iterations to bring benefits to the overall airline and airport community as quickly as possible.

In parallel, work has started on specifying the structure and processes for the European Network of Innovation Labs project, and establishing partnerships with universities and research centres.
