EUROCONTROL publishes new release of its flagship sustainability platform, FlyingGreen

FlyingGreen

EUROCONTROL has just released new updates to its flagship sustainability platform, FlyingGreen. FlyingGreen’s innovative suite of tools and resources is designed to assist aviation stakeholders in accelerating their transition toward sustainability, focusing on four strategic pillars: reducing emissions (NetZero), transitioning to sustainable fuels (Fuelling Decarb), building resilience to climate change (ClimAdapt), and access to green funding (DecarbFin).

FlyingGreen is a key priority of EUROCONTROL’s corporate programme Raising the Bar: EUROCONTROL 2030.

The recent developments primarily enhance the NetZero and ClimAdapt pillars, introducing improved tools for decarbonisation and climate adaptation, alongside a more user-friendly interface. Users can now save preferences, enjoy enhanced map functionalities, and experience an aesthetically pleasing design.

“Thanks to the great cooperation with over 100 stakeholders we have been able to further improve our FlyingGreen platform. Today’s release offers users the possibility of advanced emissions tracking and better simulations as well as greater precision in energy metrics.  I am also delighted to say that the new functions for climate change adaptation strengthens our set of tools to assist the aviation sector in their preparation to increase climate change resilience.”

Marilyn Bastin Head of Aviation Sustainability EUROCONTROL

The new features include:

Enhanced Emissions Tracking and Scenario Building – under the NetZero pillar:

  • Emissions overview: emission reductions per category (fleet renewal, revolution, ATM operational improvements, and SAF); airport emission overviews (LTO 3000ft and TMA 40NM);
  • Advanced simulations: Model fuel burn and emissions based on various growth scenarios;
  • What-if functionalities (ATM operational improvements; fleet renewal + fleet revolution);
  • Filtering options: market segment and flight phases;
  • Additional environmental cost: CORSIA, ETS, JetFuel and SAF costs;
  • Scenario saving and retrieval: Save and revisit multiple projects via login.

New core functions – under the ClimAdapt pillar:

  • High-level ECON assessment tool to run a financial assessment and evaluate the potential costs of climate impacts;
  • Repository: Access a curated collection of climate change impacts and mitigation strategies (by stakeholder, climate effect, or risk category);
  • Adaptation planning checklists: Support state-level planning and implementation;
  • Progress tracking: Save your work across tools with a secure login.

Greater precision and choice in energy metrics and electricity powerplants to be deployed – under the FuellingDecarb pillar:

  • Additional units for mass and electricity.
  • Estimation of the additional solar, offshore wind, onshore wind and nuclear power plants required to meet the electricity needs for producing aviation fuels (SAF, hydrogen, and electricity for electric-battery aircraft).

The second release of FlyingGreen also delivers an update on funds and calls as part of the DecarbFin pillar.

Next steps

The next platform releases are scheduled for March/April and June/July 2025, with further enhancements guided by feedback from the Stakeholder Engagement and Consultation Group (SECG).
