As part of the strategic partnership with Brazil, the Performance Section of the Brazilian Department of Airspace Control (DECEA) and EUROCONTROL’s Performance Review Unit have published the first report comparing operational performance in Brazil and Europe.
EUROCONTROL and Brazil publish joint report comparing operational ANS performance
Continental airspace in Brazil is about 25% smaller than in Europe but the traffic load and distribution is fundamentally different. Today DECEA - Departamento de Controle do Espaço Aéreo and EUROCONTROL publish a report comparing operational performance in Brazil and Europe.
"Performance benchmarking is a vital element in providing a basis for decision-making by providing insights in how different air navigation systems work. This first operational comparison between Brazil and Europe provides a basis to elaborate on operational concepts and supporting infrastructure in both regions."
Based on internationally established indicators, the study explores traffic characteristics and operational performance and examines commonalities and differences in terms of air traffic management and factors that influence performance.
The main report evaluates the pre-COVID-19 situation between 2016 and 2019. It is complemented by a specific briefing which illustrates the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the first half of 2021. The specific briefing will be regularly updated so as to develop a rolling comparison report.
Overall, continental airspace in Brazil is about 25% smaller than in Europe but the traffic load and distribution is fundamentally different. Both Brazil and Europe were heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the top 10 airports in Brazil and in Europe, traffic decreased in 2020 by 47% and 60% respectively.
“Currently, ATM efficiency is directly related to performance measurement, which enables the identification of improvement opportunities and good practices that will benefit the Brazilian Aviation System as a whole. Cooperation with EUROCONTROL provides us with an opportunity to evaluate and compare the Brazilian performance with international entities, and guide actions for the continuous evolution of air traffic management at a worldwide level.”
