Leaving COVID behind: Preparing for recovery
Summer 2020 saw a short and disappointing traffic recovery that suffered from flight schedule uncertainty and few passengers. Will summer 2021 be different?
State vaccination programmes are ramping up and there is pent-up demand for foreign travel. What challenges do European airports have to overcome to be ready for a hot summer?
EUROCONTROL and ACI EUROPE organised a joint webinar to address these questions and engage with airports on lessons learned and preparation goals for summer 21’.
The webinar also shared the results of the recent surveys carried out by the two organisations. These will serve as a basis for a discussion on how airports can better prepare to deal with the traffic recovery, what needs to be tackled as a priority and what has changed since last summer.

Aidan FLANAGAN ACI EUROPEThis webinar jointly organised with ACI EUROPE explored the various challenges facing European airports as we head for the summer
Moderated by EUROCONTROL's Steven Moore, Head of ATM Network Operations, the webinar drew on the experience of fellow specialists from the airport, airline, air navigation service provider and Network Manager domains: ACI's Aidan Flanagan and Eugene Leeman; Brussels Airport's Guilian Preud'homme; SWEDAVIA's Daniel Skoglund; IATA's Sergio Fernandez; and Bruno Desart from EUROCONTROL’s Airports team.
The webinar explored the challenges facing European airports as they prepare for the recovery.
Key webinar takeaways included the importance of investing in touchless technology and slot-based travel to make travelling more efficient; the value of assessing where the pinch points are in airport ops, particularly the impact of distancing; and how vital it is that all airport actors develop joint situational awareness: a year of pandemic-impacted travel has illustrated starkly that when all airports actors are coordinated, much better results can be achieved.
