The first FLY AI Forum, dedicated to exploring the latest developments and deployments of artificial intelligence and machine learning in aviation, is being organised by EUROCONTROL on behalf of the FLY AI group, an initiative we co-started in 2019 with a wide range of aviation stakeholders.

Since then, the founding FLY AI actors - the European Commission, EASA, ACI-EUROPE, Airbus, ASD, CANSO, EDA, Heathrow Airport, Honeywell, IATA, IFATCA, IFATSEA, NATO, SESAR 3 JU and Thales – have been joined by a wide community of users and AI practitioners in aviation.

Attending the FLY AI Forum 2023 will allow you to:

  • discover recent deployments of AI in aviation
  • get the latest updates from the European Commission on AI regulatory matters from EASA on their Level 2 AI guidance material, and from EUROCAE/CEN-CENELEC on AI standardisation developments
  • discuss practical use cases demonstrating the benefits that AI can bring aviation with technical and operational experts, who will show how you could accelerate the implementation of your AI project
  • share best practices with AI peers
  • visit an AI exhibition showcasing some recent success stories
  • explore the FLY AI digitalised catalogue of applications
  • get an overview of ongoing research and training activities.

About this event

The first FLY AI Forum, dedicated to exploring the latest developments and deployments of artificial intelligence and machine learning in aviation, was by EUROCONTROL on behalf of the FLY AI group, an initiative we co-started in 2019 with a wide range of aviation stakeholders.

At the event, participants:

  • discovered recent deployments of AI in aviation
  • got the latest updates from the European Commission on AI regulatory matters from EASA on their Level 2 AI guidance material, and from EUROCAE/CEN-CENELEC on AI standardisation developments
  • discussed practical use cases demonstrating the benefits that AI can bring aviation with technical and operational experts, who will show how you could accelerate the implementation of your AI project
  • shared best practices with AI peers
  • visited an AI exhibition showcasing some recent success stories
  • explored the FLY AI digitalised catalogue of applications
  • got an overview of ongoing research and training activities.

Participation

Our FLY AI Forum focuses on the practical application of artificial intelligence in aviation and is ideal for:

  • Engineers and experts already actively working in the domain of AI
  • AI project managers and data scientists
  • Everyone with a vested interest in AI for aviation.

Agenda

10:00 - 10:30

Opening & Keynote

Moderated by:

Paul Bosman
EUROCONTROL
10:30 – 12:00

Session 1: ATM/ATS

This session gathers AI product leaders in ATM whose objective is to show how much AI is already being used in the ATM world – and transforming conventional ATM/ATS operations.

The session will in particular address how AI is used in the context of 'Arrival Manager', provide new detection and resolution tools and how it could help process ATC/pilot voice data from the ATC and cockpit perspectives.

The panel will discuss lessons learned, future developments and how to capitalise on these developments to improve ATM performance.

12:00 – 13:30

Lunch break – demo visits, networking

13:30 – 15:00

Session 2: Network Operations & Infrastructure Monitoring

Artificial intelligence has developed rapidly in several EUROCONTROL Network Manager (NM) functions and tasks enabling new features in CNS monitoring or network cyber resilience. It has also proven to support civil-military integration , weather forecasting at aerodromes and optimisation of airspace management.

Based on the many use cases presented, you will discover a variety of AI technics adapted to different contexts (including those to protect privacy).

This session will discuss how to go further and seize the full potential of AI for the benefit of all network stakeholders.

Session 3: Data & AI - From Regulation to Implementation

This session will first provide an update on the ongoing regulatory and standardisation developments in the domain of AI and data in Europe and discuss its relevance to the aviation sector.

Second, AIRBUS will highlight how AI regulation and standardisation developments will be impacting a wide range of activities and focus on the need to develop novel TrustworthyAI methods to have efficient means of compliance.

Session 4: A Human-centric AI Approach for Aviation

AI is introducing fundamental changes in the way we operate. Ethical aspects and the reallocation of roles and responsibilities need to be understood, agreed and fully digested by all actors.

This session will focus on the joint AI and human system. EASA will present its human-centric AI approach for aviation, while IFATCA will outline its vision on automation and the role that AI can play in ATC. A number of use cases will illustrate how AI can contribute to operational benefits for the Network Operations Centre (e.g. in the operational management of, NOTAMs) as well as contributing to a enhanced civil-military integration in the network.

Session 5: Airport/Airline Operational Improvements

The session will take you first through AI-driven innovation in airports. To understand how AI can contribute to aviation carbon neutrality, or discover how AI could improve airport operations and accelerate their integration into the network, join us to discover some fascinating concrete examples.

AI is also an essential enabler for performance improvements to air operations. To illustrate the significant operational changes, as well as the tremendous potential benefits, that this shift is expected to bring, Airbus will present research activities illustrating how AI could be used to provide assistance to the crew.
