Urban Air Mobility (UAM) refers to the provision of mobility services enabling on-demand, highly automated, passenger or cargo-carrying, or emergency, transport services in an urban/suburban/inter-urban environment using air vehicles. These vehicles encompass everything from manned helicopters, as currently flown, through small inspection and delivery drones to ‘flying taxis’ using eVTOL (electrical Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft), with or without a pilot.
The UAM industry has significant potential for growth, and it has been estimated that by 2035, around 23,000 UAM/eVTOL vehicles will be serving a global market worth US$74 billion. An American forecast expects that 4,000 eVTOL aircraft will operate 55,000 urban airtaxi flights each day across the United States by 2035. (ref: CORUS-XUAM)
