EUROCONTROL Stakeholder Forum on aviation’s impact on non-CO₂ emissions

How can the aviation industry best address climate impacts other than CO₂?
Stakeholder forum

In this webinar we aim to explore the non-CO2 climate impact of flying, focusing primarily on what can be done to reduce the formation of contrails and cirrus cloud, as well as the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOX).

Recent studies have shown that these non-CO2 effects could be reduced substantially if the air traffic management community takes coordinated actions.

Our webinar will tackle the following key questions:

  • What is the current understanding of the main climate impacts associated with air traffic beyond CO2 emissions, in particular contrail formation – the white fumes often spotted trailing behind planes?
  • How can the aviation industry best address climate impacts other than CO2?
  • What is already being done on an operational level to address this issue, in particular contrails?
  • What are the key challenges on an operational and technological level?
  • What other measures are envisaged to reduce the impact on non-CO2 emissions?

For this discussion, we have lined up three experts with wide-ranging operational and scientific expertise who will share their insights on this complex matter, and help us understand what aviation is already doing to mitigate non-CO2 climate impacts – and what more can be done.

On the operational front, the focus will be on the live trial for contrail prevention, the first of its kind, which EUROCONTROL’s Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre has launched in partnership with DLR, the German Aerospace Centre, to assess the operational feasibility of contrail prevention by air traffic control, and to measure its impact. Watch our video about it to learn more.
