The next strategic webinar in our popular EUROCONTROL Stakeholder Forum series will take place today, where we ask:
Could improving controller mobility help reduce costly capacity issues and staffing delays?
Last year, ATC capacity and staffing delays in Europe alone delivered 7.54 million minutes of delay, costing airlines over €800 million, and inconveniencing many travellers.
But could air traffic controller (ATCO) mobility have slashed those delays – and just how important could that mobility be by 2025, when traffic starts to rise beyond 2019 levels before climbing steadily to an expected 44% more flights by 2050?
In our webinar we will be looking at ATCO mobility, both physical (when controllers move from one centre to another) and technological (e.g. where ATCOs take control of airspace outside their usual area, in order to help another control centre that is stretched).
In both situations, there are significant challenges to be overcome for this to happen – but in the case of remote operations, there are also real success stories with virtual centres and cross-border operations. On the regulatory side, we already have the European ATC Licence, with a common rating system and rules to mandate mutual recognition (even if national requirements still present difficulties).
