At the event, we demonstrated how collaboration is shaping the future of Europe's skies, creating a seamless, sustainable and future-ready aviation ecosystem.
We are the European aviation organisations working together to implement the Single European Sky. Our partners include the European Commission (DG MOVE), the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), the European Defence Agency (EDA), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), EUROCAE, the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), SESAR Deployment Manager (SESAR DM), and SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU). Together, we are shaping the future of aviation through innovation, sustainability, and partnership.
At the Europe for Aviation stand #H1894 we showcased a range of exciting activities. EUROCONTROL's demos and briefings covered a wide range of topics: including airspace optimisation, aviation sustainability, civil-military cooperation, CNS infrastructure optimisation, innovation, automation and AI-driven ATM solutions.
In summer 2024, weather-related events emerged as a significant challenge causing 47% of all ATFM delays between June-August inclusive. To address this issue, substantial improvements are necessary for the management of weather in the network for Summer 2025 and beyond. This will involve adopting a more network-oriented approach to weather management, to enhance the network pre-tactical plan to make better weather management at the heart of ATFM.

As the aviation industry works to balance its global benefits with environmental ambitions, innovation and technological advancements are opening new pathways to help the industry mitigate its impact on the climate. Contrail prevention is one of the few means available to the industry to achieve this over the short to medium-term.
MUAC is a pioneer in supporting research into contrail prevention, and it was the first to conduct an operational contrail prevention trial in 2021. Today, MUAC is using Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered by Google to better detect, predict and understand contrail formation, thereby furthering research and providing new opportunities for environmentally optimised flight operations.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to a 20% reduction in European airspace, further compounded by an increasing demand for military training. This has created additional constraints on the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA).
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to a 20% reduction in European airspace, further compounded by an increasing demand for military training. This has created additional constraints on the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA). Despite these challenges, airspace management in Europe has largely remained unchanged, resulting in discrepancies between planned and actual flight paths, which in turn generate inefficient tactical workloads. This situation highlights the urgent need for better tools, more dynamic processes and routine cross-border operations.
EUROCONTROL’s tools, such as LARA, PRISMIL and CIMACT, which are widely used by Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) at the national level, should also incorporate close coordination with airspace users and the Network Manager to facilitate smooth cross-border transit. Moreover, the exploration of digital and AI-driven solutions is crucial to optimising airspace usage and minimising tactical interventions.
This briefing will emphasise the importance of promoting cross-border Operational Air Traffic (OAT) services to ensure mission effectiveness, enhance capacity management and improve traffic deconfliction between civil and military flights. It will also highlight the solutions provided by EUROCONTROL to support these objectives.
