Raising the Aviation Bar (RATB) podcast - episode 12 background

This episode of our #RaisingTheAviationBar podcast catches up with Predrag Vranjkovic, Team Lead of EUROCONTROL’s CNS Programme Manager, to learn how EUROCONTROL is supporting the sector in optimising its Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) infrastructure, with the aim of increasing operational efficiency, resilience and sustainability while maintaining the highest levels of safety and security.

Predrag explains the challenges facing Europe’s CNS infrastructure and what the aviation sector, together with regulators, needs to take into account to move forward. While CNS infrastructure is a national responsibility, aviation transcends borders, and there is a common interest for the sector to take into account aspects that are relevant for the air traffic network as a whole. Intentional or unintentional disrupting of GNSS signals, or the excessive querying of certain frequency ranges such as the 1030 to 1090 Mhz band, are just some of the challenges experienced by many EUROCONTROL Member States, all of which can reduce the efficiency of air traffic flows.

In addition, the growing volume of air traffic is increasing the pressure on the available spectrum, which is subject to strict regulations. In 2024, EUROCONTROL was given the role of CNS Programme Manager to accelerate the upgrade of CNS equipment across Europe. In this episode Predrag explains EUROCONTROL’s work to create a process and the collaboration between national CNS experts to best support the evolution of CNS over time across the air traffic network.
