CO₂ emissions from flights so far in 2021 are 54% lower than in 2019, while flights are down by 50%

Following this summer’s strong traffic recovery, we have reviewed CO2 emissions from European flights, comparing the first nine months of 2021 with the same period in 2019. While restrictions on short-haul and long-haul travel continued from 2020 into 2021, these had significantly eased on short-haul intra-European flights by the summer. All CO2 emissions from a flight are assigned to the country of departure, so here we report just on departing flights: there were 50% fewer departing flights so far this year than in the same period in 2019, in the countries shown on the map. CO2 emissions were down a little more than flights: 54% lower than in January-September 2019. The decline in CO2 is deeper than that of flight departures because medium and long-haul flights, which emit more CO2, have recovered more slowly than short-haul.

Underlying flight data sourced from EUROCONTROL Central Route Charges Office (CRCO). The CO₂ emissions growth as shown is based on all flights departing from EUROCONTROL Member States taking into account aircraft type and route. As Israel, Morocco and Ukraine are not integrated in the multilateral route charges system they cannot be shown.

EUROCONTROL Aviation Sustainability Summit

On 22 November 2021 EUROCONTROL will be hosting a high-level Aviation Sustainability Summit bringing together thought-leaders such as Ryanair Group CEO Michael O’Leary, IATA Director General Willie Walsh, Solar Impulse Founder Dr. Bertrand Piccard, easyjet CEO Johan Lundgren, Embraer Commercial Aviation CEO Arjan Meijer, Lufthansa CCO Christina Foerster, EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky and Henrik Hololei, Director General of DG MOVE, European Commission. They will be sharing their insights on just how European aviation plans to deliver on the European Green Deal goals, and how they see transport and mobility evolving in the years ahead.

New EUROCONTROL aviation sustainability webpages

EUROCONTROL’s web section on aviation sustainability has been re-launched illustrating key data products on reducing noise, emissions and climate impacts while continuing to ensure users can immediately find EUROCONTROL’s impact assessment tools. Also, by using our new functionality in our map illustrating pioneering use of sustainable aviation fuels stakeholders are now able to share with us information on their SAF initiatives.

EUROCONTROL Stakeholder Forum on Sustainable Aviation Fuels

How much potential does sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) have to drive down aircraft emissions and speed up the decarbonisation of the aviation sector? This was the key question at one of EUROCONTROL’s recent Stakeholder Forums: For Jonas Abrahamsson, CEO Swedavia, SAF is absolutely key: “Here and now, SAF has the greatest potential to make a real difference”.

SAF can, he stressed, be used immediately, and requires no new infrastructure or modification to existing systems or aircraft. Moderated by Marylin Bastin, EUROCONTROL Head of Aviation Sustainability, the webinar also featured Flor Diaz Pulido, Head of DG MOVE’s Aviation Policy Unit, and Brian Moran, Boeing VP Global Sustainability Policy & Partnerships. Flor explained how the ReFuelEU Aviation initiative aims to break the deadlock between supply and demand for SAF and ensure that it is made available to airlines at competitive prices. Brian highlighted how Boeing is already using SAF on flight test programmes and in 2018 successfully completed the world's first commercial flight using 100% SAF. Boeing plans to have commercial aircraft certified to fly on 100% SAF by 2030. The recording of the webinar is available on EUROCONTROL’s website.

EUROCONTROL and Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore starting cooperation on emissions data

EUROCONTROL and Singapore’s CAA (CAAS) have started to extend the scope of their cooperation on the area of aviation sustainability exchanging flight data with the objective to monitor carbon emissions in the context of CORISA – ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation. EUROCONTROL already provides an Environmental Management Information Service (EMIS) to Aircraft Operators and to European authorities. The exchange with CAAS will enrich the EMIS data set and support CAAS in their monitoring of emissions of operators under their responsibility.
