Latest news on EUROCONTROL’s work on sustainability

NEATS – the non-CO₂ aviation effects tracking system - is the IT tool that the European Commission has decided to make available to Aircraft Operators (AOs), accredited verifiers and to States to facilitate and, to the extent possible, automate monitoring, reporting and verification of non-CO₂ aviation effects, in line with the EU ETS Directive. EUROCONTROL has established a NEATS AOs consultation group with representatives from aircraft operators trade associations to ensure NEATS pursues a user-centric approach.

From 17-18 November 2025 EUROCONTROL will host the EUROCONTROL Showcase Summit “Smart Sustainable Skies: Boosting Sustainability in Aviation”. The Summit will showcase tools, solutions and approaches designed to reduce the environmental and climate impact of aviation. It will bring together developers, researchers, industry experts, policymakers and sustainability professionals committed to creating a greener aviation sector.

Researchers from EUROCONTROL and Delft University have created a new AI model that can accurately estimate how much fuel different aircraft use. The system was trained using data from 64 types of aircraft and then tested on 37 more. It performed very well, with only a tiny error rate: about 0.5% for aircraft it had seen data on before, and 9% for new ones, twice as accurate as older methods. The model was later updated using data from 101 aircraft, allowing it to predict fuel use across nearly all commercial aircraft worldwide. It is available under the EUROCONTROL BADA licence and does not require individual aircraft to be specially calibrated.
