TMA2010+ in Related Projects – ANSP LVNL [SARA project]

Because of the upcoming implementation of fixed routes in the TMA serving Schiphol airport, and the resultant loss of vectoring flexibility for the approach controllers, the Dutch ANSP Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland [LVNL], is currently developing new and improved system support for handling arrival flows into Amsterdam.

One of the projects involved in this work is called SARA [Speed And Route Advisories] and the aim of SARA is to deliver the advanced system support tools that will assist controllers in delivering inbound traffic at the Initial Approach Fix [IAF] for Amsterdam, to a degree of accuracy that enables the use of fixed routes in the Amsterdam TMA.

The ground system support will do this by proposing speed and/or route options to the controllers, who then pass these to the aircraft. In the future, these SARA options could be made available for the flight through datalink, preferably before Top of Descent, so that on-board systems can maximise the efficiency for the flight in relation to its constraints/requirements. This will also help provide increased predictability in profile and time adherence for the ATC systems and controllers.

The partners in the KDC include LVNL, KLM, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, and Boeing, working through a Joint Development Agreement. SARA plays a central role in the Boeing Company's global Tailored Arrival activities. Because of the need to implement SARA arrival management in the adjacent en route airspace, Maastricht UAC is also a major participant in SARA. NLR and the TMA2010+ Project are also involved in the project activities.
