TMA2010+ Project West [Main Partner ANSP – NATS]

NATS, in addition to being a lead ANSP in TMA developments for SESAR WP5, is also a long-standing work-partner in the TMA2010+ project activities.

The TMA2010+ activity currently being conducted with NATS, and also in partnership with QinetiQ, covers a wide area in relation to TMA operations and improvements. This includes the development of an initial TMA Concept of Operations and its further refinement into a TMA Manual. These documents look at the operational impact of TMA improvement enablers, and how they fit together in an overall context.

Another element of work with NATS has looked at some broader ‘Arrival Management’ issues, including the investigation of complex cross-ACC system support. With the planned expansion of AMAN in Europe many ACC en route sectors will shortly encounter an explosion of AMAN ‘requests’ and AMAN ‘advisories’ from different airports, TMAs and arrival management systems. Maastricht UAC is typical of such an operation - it may be expected to simultaneously handle arrival management for several of Europe’s busiest airports, such as Amsterdam, Brussels, and Frankfurt. How these different arrival management requests and advisories impact on en route sectors was the subject of a study that was undertaken with NATS, QinetiQ, and with Maastricht UAC in 2008. The result of that study will be available shortly.

The cooperative partnership activity with NATS/QinetiQ is also exploring operational TMA issues in an innovative way. Currently, work is ongoing, aimed at analysing and detailing typical TMA operations, and doing so in such a way that the impact of changes brought about by the introduction of, for instance, new system-support or new procedures can be better assessed against the various elements of the operation in place. This will greatly assist implementers in focusing on, and gauging, the impact of changes to their local ATM operations.
