A follow-on experiment from PHARE Demonstration 1, known as PHARE Demonstration 1+, was carried out by the National Air Traffic Services Ltd. (NATS) as a clarification project for PHARE Demonstration 3. The aim was to re-examine the outcome of PHARE Demonstration 1, and to identify potential improvements to the PHARE Advanced Tools, ground human machine interface and procedures. The PHARE Demonstration 1+ trial took place in January and February 1997 at the Air Traffic Management Development Centre, Hurn.

The airspace simulated was based on the two UK New En Route Centre sectors 10 and 11/33, each sector being staffed by one planning controller and one tactical controller. Eight London Area and Terminal Control Centre (LATCC) controllers participated in the trial. The main aim of the PHARE Demonstration 1+ trial was to compare workload and tool use between PHARE Demonstration 1 and a modified PHARE Demonstration 1 system, following the implementation of a number of changes to tools, interface and procedures.

In summary, the conclusions were that the modifications reduced overall workload compared to the baseline of PHARE Demonstration 1. The changes made to the Highly Interactive Problem Solver no-go zones and the Communications List Window made the biggest contribution to this reduction. Increased familiarity with the system as the trial progressed also played an important role.
