The objective of the Ground Human Machine Interface project was to develop the specifications for next generation of controller working positions which would initially be used for PHARE. The Ground Human Machine Interface designs used features such as colour, windowing and graphical manipulation of objects which were novel at the time. These features were regarded as highly experimental and initially met with scepticism by some of the participating controllers. Much of this work has now been incorporated into other programs.
The contrasting approach to the development of the Ground Human Machine Interface to support the different PHARE Demonstrations (specifically PHARE Demonstration 1 and EEC PHARE Demonstration 3) highlighted a fundamental issue that is still encountered today, namely the difference between developing for operational use and for experimental use.

In PHARE Demonstration 1 the development was carried out by the same software team responsible for the platform development and the controller assistance tools integration. This team worked closely with the Ground Human Machine Interface team leading to a mutual understanding of the issues to be resolved. In EEC PHARE Demonstration 3 the development was performed largely in isolation from the other developers by experts on display technology. Whilst this approach is satisfactory for operational development when specifications are fully mature it leads to many problems in a research environment where specifications are inevitably subject to change as the various components of the system are developed. The result is a Ground HMI that at best requires additional work to modify in line with the developing system or at worst requires major redesign as result of architecture/design decisions taken.
