PHARE Demonstrations

PHARE Logo
The Demonstrations were large scale validation activities comprising integrated ground systems, air systems and air-ground data link facilities. Demonstration work comprised preparation of the ground and air sites (trials and simulated aircraft) and the integration of the advanced tools.

PHARE Demonstration 1 and PHARE Demonstration 2 investigated ATM in the year 2000 to 2005 timeframe, whereas PHARE Demonstration 3 was concerned with issues in the timeframe 2005-2015.

PHARE Demonstration 1 (PD/1)

The actual trials of PHARE Demonstration 1 were carried out in 1995 and concentrated on the en-route issues by simulating several en-route sectors and entry/exit conditions at TMA sectors. PHARE Demonstration 1 was hosted by DRA at Malvern.

PHARE Demonstration 1 was supplemented by two follow-on activities, PHARE Demonstration 1+ and PHARE Demonstration 1++ which provided input to the PHARE Demonstration 3 project.

PHARE Demonstration 2 (PD/2)

PHARE Demonstration 2 addressed the terminal approach issues by simulating several sectors of an extended TMA and emulating entry and exit conditions at en-route sectors. PHARE Demonstration 2 was hosted by DLR at Braunschweig. The trials were run at the end of 1996.

PHARE Demonstration 2 was supplemented by a follow-on activity, PHARE Demonstration 2+ which provided input to the PHARE Demonstration 3 project.

PHARE Demonstration 3 (PD/3)

PHARE Demonstration 3 was planned to demonstrate multi-sector, multi-centre en-route and extended TMA planning issues in the timeframe 2005 to 2015. PHARE Demonstration 3 was hosted by CENA, NLR and EEC. PHARE Demonstration 3 also carried out three internal operational clarification projects directed at issues connected with:
  • Multi-Sector planning;
  • Human centred automation and;
  • En-route TMA interfacing.
A final set of demonstrations were run in 1998, building upon the experience obtained in PHARE Demonstration 1 and PHARE Demonstration 2. The PHARE Demonstration 3 Demonstration at CENA specifically demonstrated the departure and en-route integration phase. The Demonstration at NLR was focused on the en-route integration with arrivals and PHARE Demonstration 3 at EEC was intended to investigate the entire en-route phase from end of departure phase to the beginning of arrival phase demonstrating the use of multi-sector planning.

PHARE Video

The video entitled "PHARE - A Path to Future Air Traffic Management" was presented at the PHARE Forum in June 1999. It is the last of a series of 4 videos that were produced during the PHARE Programme.
