Requirements for the implementation of automatic and manual label anti-overlap functions

In a number of the ATC radar displays proposed today to the air traffic controllers, much of the important data concerning an aircraft is presented in its radar label.

The constant good legibility of this information is of the utmost importance for the controller, as is the absence of ambiguity on the relation between a label and a position symbol. Therefore, the overlapping of radar labels should be minimised. This note describes the principal HMI requirements and related inferred implementation requirements concerning automatic radar label de-confliction. As automatic de-confliction cannot solve all the overlap problems, a number of requirements concerning the manual global and individual label positioning is proposed. The transition between the automatic and the manual modes is also addressed.
