Welcome to the NexSAT Steering Group Homepage

The NexSAT Steering Group is a discussion forum set up and coordinated by EUROCONTROL to provide a framework for cooperation amongst all interested parties, addressing matters such as the investigation of requirements and technological solutions for a new generation satellite system providing ATS (Air Traffic Service) communications services.

Standards for the Future Satellite Communication System
NEXSAT SG established a subgroup to facilitate standardisation activities for the future satellite communications system. The group aims to help the update of the existing AMS(R)S SARPs to include more stringent performance requirements and develop recommendations for a future system meeting the updated requirements. The group is referred as the NEXUS group and ECTL will act as the facilitator of the discussions.

Air Ground Communications Focus Group (AGCFG/5) and NexSAT Steering Group (NexSAT/10) on 24-25 March, 2009, Brussels
The meeting of the combined AGCFG/5 and NexSAT/10 was held on 24th and 25th of March 2009, in Brussels.

About 60 representatives from different organizations have attended the meeting with about 28 technical presentations given.

An update on the satellite developments was given and in particular the meeting discussed the potential options for a new standard for satellite communications supporting more stringent performance requirements. It was proposed that the NexSAT SG would facilitate the development of a consensus proposal/material for subsequent input to ICAO. The meeting agreed to create an ad-hoc sub-group led by Eurocontrol to address this issue.

In addition the meeting provided an update on the FCI developments through technical presentations. For the Standardisation and SESAR activities, an update was given of the ICAO/ACP and SJU relevant developments, along with a briefing on the WRC2011 preparations and the Civil/Military COM aspects.

NexSat Steering Group 10th Meeting
NEXT MEETING of the NexSAT Steering Group: 24-25 MARCH 2009 in EUROCONTROL HQ in Brussels. The meeting will start at 9:00 am for both days.

A two day duration is foreseen in order to integrate the meeting with the Air Ground Communication Focus Group (AGCFG), the EUROCONTROL advisory group for mobile communications aspects and the Future Communications Infrastructure (FCI) in particular.

In the NexSAT SG meeting, there will be information about the satellite communication developments for aviation from various partners. In particular it is also planned to discuss the outcome of the ESA Iris activities (Phase A) addressing the potential options for a new standard for satellite communications for aviation.
