Mode S Ground Infrastructure

HungaroControl has replaced two long range radar stations with Mode S radar stations (capable of enhanced surveillance), and upgraded the MATIAS ATCC facility.

To date, there is no mandate for the carriage and operation of Mode S ELS transponders within Hungarian airspace.

AIC A 002/2010 (Mode S Procedures – Display of Downlinked Aircraft Parameters (DAPs) and Input of Correct Aircraft Identification in Budapest FIR) explains the benefits and use of certain DAPs. A copy of this AIC is available via the Hungary AICs link below.

Although the carriage and operation of a Mode S transponder capable of downlinking EHS aircraft parameters will not be compulsory in the Budapest FIR, where an aircraft is so equipped, the installation and wiring of the instruments and transponder shall guarantee the downlinking of correct values in accordance with certification guidance contained in EASA Document AMC 20-13, or other equivalent airworthiness specifications.

Mode S ELS/EHS - Operational Introduction

Hungary is a participating member of the ACID Programme and will commence ELS operations by 9th Februry 2012.

Certain Mode S DAPs (see AIC A 002/2010) have been utilised within the Budapest FIR since 29th July 2010.
