Mode S Ground Infrastructure |
Two civil (Prague and Pisek) Mode S ground radar systems are operational within the Czech Republic. In the eastern part of the Czech Republic, Mode S will be provided through a (Wide Area Multilateration) network.

Mode S ELS - Requirements for the Carriage and Operation of Mode S Transponders |

The carriage and operation of Mode S level 2 transponders with Elementary Surveillance functionality (ELS), as a minimum (including SI-code), compliant with ICAO Annex 10 Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) is mandatory for aircraft operating IFR and VFR flights as General Air Traffic in the following airspace:
• ACC sectors W, N and S of CTA Praha, above FL 95.
• TMA Praha and CTR Ruzyně.
From 31 May 2012 mandatory carriage and operation of Mode S transponders with ELS functionality will be extended for:
• IFR flights in FIR Praha,
• VFR flights in FIR Praha above FL95,
• VFR flights in TMA Praha and CTR Ruzyně.

Mode S EHS - Requirements for the Carriage and Operation of Mode S Transponders |

From 31 May 2012, the carriage and operation of Mode S transponders with EHS functionality will be mandatory for fixed-wing aircraft having a maximum take-off mass in excess of 5700 kg or having a maximum cruising true airspeed capability in excess of 463 km/h (250 kt) conducting IFR flights within FIR Praha.

From 31 May 2012, certain temporary exemptions from the carriage and operation of Mode S EHS airborne equipment may be granted, but only on a case-by-case basis. Mode S ELS/EHS - Operational Introduction |
The Air Navigation Services of the Czech Republic (ANS CZR) and Germany’s Deutsche Flusicherung (DFS) will conduct ELS trials for city pair flights between Prague and Munich during September 2010. Subject to the success of these trials, ELS operations will be extended to other city pair flights between Prague and other, selected, participating aerodromes in Germany and France.
From 31 May 2012, EHS operations are planned to commence within FIR Praha.
