Mode S Ground Infrastructure |
Mode S radars have been established at Bertem, St. Hubert and Brussels Airport. The new ATC en-route and approach facility (CANAC 2) became operational in mid 2009.

Mode S ELS - Requirements for the Carriage and Operation of Mode S Transponders |
See the Mode S Operational Overview pages of this site for details concerning the functionality requirements for Mode S ELS transponders.
The carriage and operation of Mode S transponders with Basic Functionality is mandatory in Brussels FIR/UIR airspace as designated in the AIP Belgium and G.D. of Luxembourg, as follows:
a) For IFR flights as General Air Traffic (GAT):
Aircraft must be Mode S ELS compliant.
b) For VFR flights, conducted in airspace where currently the carriage and operation of SSR transponders is mandatory:
Aircraft must be Mode S ELS compliant with effect from 01 Jan 2011.

Mode S EHS - Requirements for the Carriage and Operation of Mode S Transponders |

The airspace at and above FL 245 in the Brussels FIR/UIR is designated for the mandatory carriage and operation of Mode S EHS transponders (i.e. aircraft that have a maximum take-off mass greater than 5,700 kg or a maximum cruising true airspeed in excess of 250 kt operating as GAT under IFR within this airspace must be Mode S EHS compliant).
