To increase air traffic capacity |
Air traffic is growing steadily in Europe and air traffic management must keep pace if safety and efficiency is to be maintained in the future. The classical methods of achieving operational improvements are nearing their limits and new initiatives are necessary to accommodate the current and planned growth in air traffic.
Controller Support tools will play a role alongside other ongoing developments, such as air/ground data link services and cockpit based tools, which are aimed at overall improvements in safety, efficiency and productivity for Europe’s ATM.
In the past the implementation of controller tools in Europe has been slow, fragmented and uncoordinated, leading to diversity in local implementation and operational practices often not aligned with targeted European objectives.
The growth in air traffic, the drive for safety improvements and cost efficiency requires a more European wide coordinated approach to the implementation of controller support tools in order to meet the needs of airspace users.

Validated concepts and tools deployment coordination |
The aim of EUROCONTROL's FASTI Programme is to ensure the rapid and coordinated deployment of an initial set of controller support tools. In doing so, short and medium term requirements will be addressed while the deployment will also establish a foundation for further automation in ATC in the longer term.
Considerable work has already been achieved in this field under EUROCONTROL's Automated Support to Air Traffic Services (ASA) activities; those tools and system support elements considered sufficiently mature for implementation, Medium Term Conflict Detection, Monitoring Aids and System Supported Coordination have been handed over to FASTI for operational implementation.

Single European Sky (SES) |
The programme is consistent with the objectives of the SES initiative and will address the need for operational improvements and interoperability in the short term. It will contribute to the first phase of the SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) Implementation Phase.
