Environmental/Sustainability Research |
Broadly, this covers the better scientific understanding of air traffic's environmental impact through environmental/sustainability research and development. The Society, Environment and Economics Research Area at the EEC is the focus of the Agency's environmental research. It manages applied research to meet the needs of the Domain work packages, and also handles prospective research work in its own right.

The Society, Environment and Economics (SEE) Research Area |
 |
 |
The SEE Research Area is concerned with the sustainability impacts of ATM, and with the impact of Society on ATM as a part of the global air transport system. The ultimate customer of the air transport system is the general public, expecting safe, environmentally friendly, available and affordable services provided in a sustainable way. Therefore, in a time of rapid changes in the ATM field in many different areas (traffic, technical, institutional, industry), it is becoming increasingly necessary for ATM to understand better the expectations of its ultimate customer.
The mission of this new Research Area is to increase, both for the ATM community and Society, the understanding of "How ATM can contribute to the Sustainable Development of Air Transport", through co-ordinated research and prospective studies, and efficient dissemination of findings.

ACARE - the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe |
European aeronautical research for the coming fifteen years is being carried out in the framework of ACARE - the Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research in Europe - to which EUROCONTROL has made a substantial contribution. ACARE identified a number of challenges, one of which was that of the Environment. It has identified four specific goals for a more environmentally sustainable air transport system:
- To reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 50%;
- To reduce perceived external noise by 50%;
- To reduce NOX by 80%;
- To make substantial progress in reducing the environmental impact of the manufacture, maintenance and disposal of aircraft and related products.

 |
 |
ACARE identified Air Traffic Management as being in a position to make a strong contribution to meeting these research goals, in particular in the reduction of emissions and perceived external noise.
