The Environmental Challenge |
 |
Society's concerns about the environmental impact of aviation are much wider than simply reducing public exposure to noise. They now encompass air quality around airports and climate change in particular. Although the aviation industry has cut aircraft noise and emission levels impressively in a relatively short period of time, there is no technological "silver bullet" on the horizon that will further reduce aviation's environmental impact significantly. Indeed, since the rate of air traffic growth is expected to outstrip improvements in aviation's environmental performance, the capacity of the entire European air traffic management network will be increasingly constrained by environmental factors.
The EUROCONTROL Agency is committed to bringing its expertise and resources to bear on the problem of mitigating environmental impact. Support to international policy and the fostering of research have been the priorities in recent years. Now there is a focus on harnessing the Agency's resources to develop implementation programmes and strategic services targeted directly at using Air Traffic Management (ATM) to improve environmental performance for the benefit of aviation stakeholders. This will in turn improve our support to international policy making and enhance the focus of our applied research.
