The EPATS project

The EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre (EEC) is a participant in the EPATS project, which is a component of the European Commission's Sixth Frame Programme (FP6).

EPATS is an acronym for European Personal Air Transport System study.

"This future EPATS system will provide a wide choice of transportation mode - and the wider use of small aircraft, served by small airports, to create access to more communities in less time.

The goal of the EPATS proposal is to demonstrate the needs and potential of small aircraft business development and to propose recommendations for the introduction of this new European Air Transportation System in the context of the European Research Areas."

(From the EPATS web site (see link below).)

Project objective

The main purpose of the EPATS project is to:
  1. demonstrate the needs and potential of small aircraft business development
  2. propose recommendations for the introduction of this new type of air vehicle in the European air transportation system, and
  3. identify further areas of research in the context of the European Research Areas.
The EPATS study addresses the following issues:
  • the potential new market for personal aviation up to 2020
  • the potential impact of this new way of transport on the European ATM system, airport infrastructures, as well as the environmental, safety and security issues involved; and
  • the EPATS general specification and R&D roadmap.
