TESA - Toolset For Environmental Sustainability Assessment

Assessing environmental consequences of changes in Air Traffic Management and future scenarios.
  Watch the TESA slideshow.1.29 MB

Challenging Times

On the current world scene, where sustainable development is of concern, environmental aspects are of paramount importance. Whereas the public expresses an ever increasing demand for air transport, world summits raise questions of environmental sustainability. ATM research meets the challenge of this dichotomy by delivering solutions that address improved capacity and efficiency whilst ensuring the highest level of safety and minimizing the impact on the environment.

TESA: Tools for Solutions

TESA, the EUROCONTROL Toolset for Environmental Sustainability Assessment, provides a framework for studying changes to the ATM system such as new runways, new ATC procedures, new air-route structures, new aircraft types, increased demand, etc., and for arriving at solutions that minimise their environmental impact. The TESA tools evaluate the impact of changes in terms of local air quality, noise, and global emissions.

TESA is driven by 4D flight profiles (sources from Central Flow Management Unit (CFMU), radar, fast-time simulations, real-time simulations, real flight data). The tools are closely coupled to international databases (for example: the Aircraft Noise & Performance database, ICAO engine emissions databank, weather information, GIS data).

TESA provides an efficient support tool for decision makers and can help evaluate achievement of targets. TESA is a unique set of tools for providing answers to key questions, both for EUROCONTROL Agency projects and for the wider international community.

International organisations such as ICAO & ECAC are also addressing environmental issues. TESA supports studies for the international community and respects evolving international guidance material.
