The AudioLAN was originally designed by EUROCONTROL and developed externally under contract. AudioLAN has been subsequently enhanced by the Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile (ENAC).

The function of the AudioLAN Maintenance project is to provide a flexible and scalable facility for voice communications in real-time ATC simulations. As implemented, the AudioLAN is a cost-effective and adaptable system offering very high voice quality. It has potential applications outside the field of ATC simulations. It has been "commercialised" by concluding non-exclusive licence agreements with industry. The AudioLAN is used in the context of real-time ATC and ATM simulations. It is a component of the simulation platform and interfaces with the HMI components of the simulator.

The AudioLAN is currently used at the following ATC training and ATC research establishments:
- The EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre in Brétigny-sur-Orge.
- EUROCONTROL's Institute of Air Navigation Services in Luxembourg.
- EUROCONTROL's Maastricht Upper Area Centre in Maastricht.
- The CEATS (Central European Air Traffic Services) Research Development and Simulation Centre in Budapest.
- The Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile in Toulouse.

These users have formed the AudioLAN users group (ALUG) with the aim of maintaining professional support for their own version of the AudioLAN. The ALUG has decided to select an industrial partner through a common call for tenders for AudioLAN software maintenance and support (AudioLAN third-party maintenance).

|
The main goal is to have a common strategy shared by all current users for the maintenance and support of the AudioLAN product. The secondary goal is the expansion of such product on operational ATC platforms in Europe.
