At the heart of everything we do |
EUROCONTROL, together with its partners, considers environmental sustainability as a key objective in all the air traffic management (ATM) improvements it undertakes.
In fact, measures to limit aviation’s impact on the environment are now widely incorporated into airport operations and procedures, routeing of flights and ATM system capabilities and specifications. These measures have already reduced European aviation’s greenhouse gas emissions by two million tonnes per year.
EUROCONTROL also provides support to the European Commission to prepare for the inclusion of aircraft CO² emissions in the EU’s emissions trading scheme (ETS).

A sustainable organisation for a sustainable European aviation |
EUROCONTROL not only strives to reduce aviation’s negative impact on the environment. It also undertakes a comprehensive range of activities to reduce its own footprint as much as possible.
See the 2008 CSR Report for examples of environmental efforts.
We provide expert environmental support to our European aviation partners to achieve the following objectives:
Reducing aviation’s carbon footprint
By making operational aviation measures more efficient, EUROCONTROL also helps to minimise greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and reduce noise, so helping to make aviation more sustainable.
Modelling the environmental impact of aviation
Our three key models to assess environmental impact, covering fuel burn and emissions, local air quality, and noise have all passed ‘stress tests’ established by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The Advanced Emissions Model has now been embedded into our key airspace simulation tool. As a result, fuel burn and greenhouse gas emissions can now be systematically analysed for any given operational scenario.
Greening the European ATM network
In partnership with our stakeholders, we facilitate changes to the European air traffic route network. This ranges from major revisions every few years to regular monthly adjustments. It also includes planning network changes for the peak summer traffic period each year. Each change is assessed for its impact on fuel burn and emissions.
Increasing environmental awareness of aviation personnel
Through our training institute we contribute to raising the environmental awareness of European ATM and airline personnel with classroom and e-learning. And through the CFMU we provide online awareness about fuel management.
