Driving down the cost of flying |
Airspace fragmentation in Europe and the complexity of the existing air traffic management (ATM) system add to the cost of flying for airspace users.
EUROCONTROL works with its partners to bring efficiency of the European ATM system close to its optimum level, with savings for airspace users evaluated by some at € 3.4 billion per year.
These combined efforts are driven mainly by the joint CANSO, EUROCONTROL and IATA Flight Efficiency Plan (FEP) and by the ambitious efficiency objectives set by our Provisional Council and monitored by the independent Performance Review Commission (PRC).

Reduced costs to improve the performance of European air transport |
EUROCONTROL is committed to making the most strenuous efforts to provide financial and environmental gains whilst ensuring that safety and capacity are not adversely affected.
In close partnership with airlines, airports and air navigation service providers (ANSPs), we help to achieve the following objectives:
Jointly improving network efficiency
We are working with partners to implement an enhanced route network that provides more direct routes for flights, and which reduces the time aircraft spend in holding patterns, among other benefits.
Achieving efficiency through flexibility
In the past, large tracts of airspace were reserved exclusively for military purposes. Now, conditional routes (CDRs) may be flown across that airspace when it is not being used by the military.
Generating cost-effectiveness through improved flow management
Economies of scale are generated thanks to our pan-European management of air traffic flows. Our provision of online aeronautical information services also contributes significantly to more efficient flow management across Europe.
Ensuring the efficient collection of route charges
EUROCONTROL collects route charges on behalf of its Members States. Our highly efficient cost-recovery system contributes to funding the European ATM system by delivering some 80% of the revenue of ANSPs.
Providing efficient regional air traffic control (ATC) services
Delivering first-class ATC services at the lowest possible cost has always been one of EUROCONTROL’s key business objectives, through its Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC).
