20 Aug 2010 Air traffic situation
Today, 20 August 2010, at 14:50 CET, EUROCONTROL’s Upper Area Control Centre in Maastricht (MUAC), providing air navigation services to the upper airspace (above 24,500 feet) of Belgium, North-West Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, suffered equipment problems.

As a result, capacity was reduced and air traffic flow and capacity management measures introduced.

At 15:20 gradual recovery started resulting in normal capacity at 16:30.

Due to backlog of traffic, delays are expected to continue until 19:00. Approximately 700 flights are being affected, with a 20-minute delay each. Total delay due to the situation is estimated to be around 15,000 minutes.

28 Apr 2010 Volcanic ash cloud: Return to normal operations
In accordance with the conclusions of the 19 April teleconference of the Members of the Provisional Council, EUROCONTROL has been facilitating the implementation of the preferred solution since 20 April 2010.

To this end charts showing areas of potential higher contamination including a buffer area have been produced in close coordination with the London Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre. These charts enabled States to establish NO FLY zones where necessary.

The Volcanic Ash Advisories and Predicted Ash Concentration charts produced by VAAC London show that there has been no area of high potential volcanic ash coverage within the CFMU area for several days now.

Production of the EUROCONTROL charts will therefore cease with immediate effect.

Volcanic Ash Advisories and predicted ash concentration charts will continue to be issued by the London VAAC.

All relevant EUROCONTROL services are, of course in a state of readiness should there be any change in the situation.

27 Apr 2010 Fifteenth anniversary of centralised flow management
Air traffic management history was made on 27 April 1995: for the first time on the European continent, flow management was done centrally.

The Central Flow Management Unit (CFMU) officially took responsibility for tactical air traffic management in French airspace - a function which had previously been carried out by CORTA, the Cellule d’organisation et de regulation du traffic aérien.

Over the next twelve months, the remaining four European Flow Management Units in Frankfurt, London, Rome and Madrid were progressively transferred to the CFMU.

But the first transfer was the most challenging - “a remarkable operational and technical achievement”, according to the CFMU’s Director at the time, Dirk Duytschaever.

23 Apr 2010 Update on European air traffic situation - 09.00 CET
As of 09.00 CET on 4 May 2010, EUROCONTROL has the following update to make with regard to the situation of air traffic in Europe:

23 Apr 2010 Update on European air traffic situation - 12.30 CET
Since yesterday, Thursday 22 April, traffic across Europe has been back to normal levels, as almost all European airspace has been available and almost all restrictions have been lifted.

22 Apr 2010 Update on European air traffic situation - 10.30 CET
Today EUROCONTROL expects that traffic will be at normal levels (between 28,000 and 29,000 flights).
A small number of cancellations can be expected due to some limited restrictions and the logistical problems of airlines resuming their regular schedules. All EUROCONTROL services remain fully mobilised to assist in the resumption of normal operations.
Yesterday, Wednesday 21 April, there were 22,189 flights in European airspace –almost 80% of normal traffic levels.
At the current time, almost  all European airspace is available, with a few exceptions  in parts of Southern Finland, southern Norway, northern Scotland,  and western Sweden.

21 Apr 2010 Update on European air traffic situation - 18.30 CET
EUROCONTROL expects approximately 22,500 flights to take place today in European airspace. On a normal Wednesday, we would expect 28,000. Thus over 80% of the total number of flights are expected to take place in Europe today.

21 Apr 2010 Update on European air traffic situation - 11.00 CET
EUROCONTROL expects approximately 21,000 flights to take place today in European airspace. On a normal Wednesday, we would expect 28,000.

Thus approximately 75% of the total number of flights are expected to take place in Europe today.

By the end of today, we expect that over 100,000 flights in total will have been cancelled since Thursday 15 April.

2009 SRC Annual Safety Report

05 Jan 2010 Short-term flight forecasts predict weak growth for European aviation
First low-cost, then business aviation, have returned to growth in recent weeks. The largest market segment, ‘traditional’ carriers, is hovering just below 0% growth and looks set for a return to growth in January 2010.

The total number of flights in Europe has tracked 2006 for most of the year, but with further cuts in the winter 2009-2010 timetable, November and December 2009 will have much the same volumes of traffic as in 2005.

Calendar year 2009 should have 6.6% fewer flights than 2008, the largest annual decline on record.

For 2010, the forecast is for a weak 1.7% growth, driven by an anaemic economic recovery, low yields, continuing scarcity of credit and a high oil price. There appear to be both upside and downside risks to this.

Even 2011, though the uncertainty is wide at this range, is forecast to grow at a below average rate of 3.2%.
