Route Charges

What are route charges?

European airspace users have to pay for the services they use when flying in controlled airspace and so incur route charges for every flight they make. These are charged to them every month by EUROCONTROL's Central Route Charges Office, the CRCO.

The CRCO works out which portions of airspace were overflown for each flight and using a special formula, which - amongst other elements - takes the aircraft's weight into account (so smaller aircraft pay less). It calculates what each State is owed and bills the airspace user. It then returns that proportion of the total route charge to each State over which the aircraft flew.

State use that money to fund air navigation services - like air traffic control and meteorological services - as well as to invest in future developments in the field of air traffic management.
