European flights expected to decline by 1.3% in 2012

Brussels, Belgium – The first 3 months of 2012 saw a total of 2.12 million flights in Europe. This is a decrease of 3.3% on the first 3 months of 2011, after allowing for the leap year.

After the decline in flight growth observed since the winter schedule was put in place and in line with the new flight forecast that takes into account the recent lower economic trends, the forecast for 2012 has been significantly revised downwards compared to the September 2011 forecast, although the service units should still grow more quickly than the flights.

Brussels, Belgium – The number of flights in Europe is set to fall by 1.3% this year compared to 2011, reflecting the continent’s economic problems and the recent surge in fuel prices, according to the latest edition of EUROCONTROL’s Medium Term Forecast of European Flights (2012-2018).

In recent months, Europe has seen a 5 percentage point drop in flight growth and a cut in the economic growth forecast for 2012 from 1.7% to 0%. This drop in flight growth is sooner and deeper than the economic indicator would suggest.
