The main groups of EUROCONTROL tools developed and/or used by CASCADE are:
- ADS-B/TIS-B Validation Test bed (AVT)
Surveillance Analysis Support System (SASS) Suites
- Sensor Analysis Tool SASS-S/RASS-S
- Sensor Analysis Tool SASS-C,
- Mode-S/1090ES RF and Traffic environment measurement tools.

The tools are briefly described below:

ADS-B/TIS-B Validation Test-bed (AVT) |
AVT (ADS-B/TIS-B Validation Test platform), is a full end-to-end surveillance system including real-time multi-sensor surveillance data processing system, Controller Working Positions, as well as simulators and recording/play-back/analysis tools. The system is located at the EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre in Brétigny.
An outline of AVT is presented below:

The platform consists of the following elements:
- ADS-B Ground Stations
- Radar Data input
- Multi-sensor Surveillance Data Processing and Distribution system
- Controller Platforms
- TIS-B Server
- Aircraft/Surveillance Sensor Simulators
- Recording/Play back and Analysis tools

ADS-B Ground Stations
A 2-channel 1090ES Ground Station is located at the EEC. Each channel can be seen as an independent ADS-B receiver and is connected to an individual antenna. One omni-directional antenna and one sectorised antenna are installed and connected to their respective receiver channels.
The platform has also a connection to a 1090ES Ground Station operated by DSNA and located at Toulouse Blagnac airport.
A VDL-4 Ground Station is located at Orly. A UAT Ground Station is located at the EEC, with a dedicated antenna mounted on the roof of the EEC building.
Radar Data input
AVT receives real-time radar data from French radars (8 sites) through a data connection with DSNA in Toulouse.
AVT uses the RMCDE for connection of radars and ADS-B Ground Stations, so potentially the platform can connect to any sensor which outputs its data to the RADNET network.
Multi-Sensor Surveillance Data Processing and Distribution System
AVT incorporates the state of the art multi sensor tracking system ARTAS ADD, version V7A1, capable of handling both ADS-B and radar (PSR, SSR and Mode S) plots and producing a fused and seamless air traffic situation picture. The available surveillance sensor input guarantees an overall surveillance picture covering all of France, southern part of the Benelux, northern Spain, and part of the English east coast.
Controller Platforms
The two real-time simulators in use by the Experimental Centre, namely ESCAPE and eDEP have been adapted in such a way, that their surveillance data, normally generated by a traffic generator with pseudo-pilots, is now derived from the AVT SDPDS (ARTAS) or directly from an ADS-B Ground Station. Additional feature of ESCAPE is the possibility of processing real-time FPL data received through a connection with the IFPU.
TIS-B Server
The platform contains a TIS-B Server, receiving the system track output data from ARTAS. The TIS-B Server allows to define service volumes of airspace and subsequently to send the surveillance data contained in those volumes to designated TIS-B Ground Stations.
Aircraft/Surveillance Sensor Simulators
The platform contains the SASS-C simulation component SMART version 5 (SMART 5). SMART 5 allows for the definition of simulated surveillance sensors (radars and ADS-B Ground Station), and the definition of off-line defined aircraft trajectories. The aircraft trajectories will be “flown” in real-time and the surveillance sensor simulators will generate corresponding radar and/or ADS-B data. The surveillance sensors can be configured for link error simulation. Additionally SMART5 can handle input from external traffic generators. Simulated traffic can be mixed with real traffic or used in a stand-alone environment.
The AVT Platform contains also an RF simulator (RES, Radar Environment Simulator) which can generate RF signals from off-line defined scenario’s. These RF signals can be fed into the antenna input of an ADS-B Ground Station. RF signals can contain FRUIT, overlapping signals due to responses to radar interrogation or TCAS signals.
Recording/Play-back and Analysis Tools
The main tools for recording and play-back are Gengate, RAPS and MAS.
MAS (Multisource Acquisition Suite) is a recording and replay tool capable of recording radar plots (PSR, MSSR, Mode-S), ADS-B reports and tracks. MAS is part of the SASS-C V7 suite.
The main analysis tools are SASS-C ADS-B proto version and AVTool.
As part of the EEC AVT platform, there is also an equipped General Aviation Aircraft.

In addition to the above, the CASCADE programme uses or supports the development of the following EUROCONTROL tools:
- CAPT (Coverage and Planning Tool for ADS-B and TIS-B
- TRES (trajectory Reconstruction and Evaluation Suite
- 1090 MHz Signal Analysis Tool
|
 |
 |
CAPT (Coverage And Planning Tool for ADS-B and TIS-B) |
| CAPT is a fast-time simulator dedicated to ADS-B technology, designed to aid in the positioning of ADS-B and TIS-B ground stations by assessing various communication load scenarios. CAPT is part of the SASS-C suite. |
|
|
|
 |
 |
TRES (Trajectory Reconstruction and Evaluation Suite) |
|
TRES will be the central surveillance analysis Suite of SASS-C V7, implementing improved reconstruction capability and taking into account Aircraft Derived Data.
|
|
 |
 |
1090 MHz Signal Analysis Tool |
The tool measures the 1090 MHz RF environment for a ground or on board 1090 MHz receiver. The tool will record and analyse the 1090 MHz video signal either at the output of a ground receiver (Mode-S or ADS-B 1090ES) or an on board ACAS/TCAS receiver.
